Applications

Applications are reviewed during Wednesdays, starting at 8pm Eastern Time. This may change as the game expands.
Before the game starts, applications will be accepted on Fridays!

Updated note, on April 7th: Applicants who have applied and have been accepted will stay in the game; not to worry about that.

Before you Apply:

! We request that players be 18 and over to play within this game setting! While this is not a sex game, there may be extremely graphic images of torture and body horror within.
!Please make sure you've familiarized yourself with our RULES & FAQs. There will be a question there that is asked on our application!
! Make sure your character hasn't already been TAKEN or RESERVED by someone else.
! If you have a RESERVE for your character, please indicate as such in the subject line of your application.
! Plagiarizing any part of your application is not acceptable. Reusing portions applications from other games is okay, as long as that application was written by you. If we are presented with evidence that you have plagiarized, you will be permanently banned from applying for that character and banned from applying for any other characters during the current application cycle. Linking for history is understandable; however, for samples, personality, and other sections, if you plagiarized or lie as to who you are you will be permanently banned. First and final warning.
! You may post your application either on your character's journal and provide a link in the comments, or you may post it directly in the comments below. If you opt for the former, however, we ask that you please either disable customized comment pages, or at least ensure that your character's journal layout is reasonably legible.
! Remember that you may only apply for one character at a time. In order to apply for more characters, you need to pass activity check. That means one per twenty eight days!

We will state again for players to please contact the moderators if you are applying for a character under the age of 16. We love playing kid characters! They add a new angle, like any character in a game. However, we'd like to make sure that they're not overwhelmed by the trauma that this game may inflict.

If you'd like to speak to us about aging your character up, or power limiting, please let us know! We'd love to work with you.

We don't bite hard, we promise!

Fandom Character Applications:

Name: What's your handle? We'd like to have something to call you!
Age: Are you over 18?
Contact Information: Any means of contact that you are comfortable with sharing; this includes plurk, AIM, MSN, skype, email address, and dreamwidth accounts!
Other Characters: Just checking now many you have already!

Character Name: Names and nicknames, in Western order (first name, surname)
Canon: Where is your character from? What book or movie or series or video game or anime?
Canon Point: Where in the series are you taking them from?
Age: How old is your character?
Why do you feel this character would be appropriate for this setting? Suitability. This is more or less us making sure that you've given this consideration. There may be elements of the game that's considered triggery for some characters, if not the players. We'd like players to consider before apping in-this section can be a break or make the application, believe it or not!
What are they bringing? (limit 3) You can choose up to THREE items to bring with your character. No, you don't have to choose clothes unless they're magic infused power armour. Sadly, no pets allowed at this time. That might be changed in the future though!
Abilities/Powers: Please assume canon-blindness and explain in as much detail as possible. (We'd also love to hear any drawbacks to these powers!)
Background/History: A link to a source about the canon is fine for this.
Previous Game History: (optional) At least two paragraphs on important events for the character and how they have been shaped by the previous game. If this is not applicable, please delete this section.
Personality: A very important section! We ask that you could please write 300 words at a minimum. Consider us canon blind. We want to hear their voice, to know who they are! It's understandable if the character seems shallow, if they are a minor or a untalking video game protagonist. Take this as a challenge to expand! A little head canon never hurts anyone. If you run out of things to write, think of how they react physically to their environment and to emotional situations, how they stand, if they meet peoples eyes, the impact of their culture, if they are a listener or a speaker, etc. These can add up to make a detailed description!

Triggers What can trigger your character? Generally these can be uncomfortable topics, situations, or people. What sort of things would you like to avoid for them (or not!) and why? If they don't have any triggers, do you think they will develop in game? What kind?

1st Person Sample Entry: Min. limit 100 words and 5 sentences, meaning you should have at least 5 sentences that add up to 100 words. Must take place within Exploration Zero setting. If you can't think up anything, we have some options! You can write on their 1) reaction to waking up in the Birdcage Manor, 2) feeling ill after eating something from the forest, 3) your character has found a stack of booze; what do? You can also choose a fourth option by writing 'Mod interview!' and the moderators will give you a list of five questions for your character to answer.
3rd Person Sample Entry: A third person sample of at least two paragraphs of 350 words. Again, if you can't think up anything, we have some options for you: 1) Waking up in the Birdcage Manor, 2) Finding a room of mirrors and feeling like you're being watched, 3) Stumbling upon a grotesque mask that gives them an extremely bad feeling, 4) Being locked outside the manor without your phone device.

Character Name: Evan Timore
Age: 177
Why do you feel this character would be appropriate for this setting?: N/A
Background/History: Evan is a vampire, but not the kind lately popularized in certain recent pop culture fads. (The particulars of his vampirism will be gone over in the ‘powers’ section.) He and his twin brother, Elliot, were born in the late 1800s on the eastern edge of America to a woman who, ashamed of giving birth to mixed-race children, quickly abandoned them at the nearest orphanage. Evan and Elliot were adopted in their early childhood years by a mysterious figure who took them away to live in his estate, keeping a steady role in their lives until they hit their mid-twenties. At this point, the man who had become a father figure revealed his identity as a vampire and offered them eternal life. They both accepted.
Shortly after their transformation, Evan’s Master (his vampiric sire) was killed by a vampire hunter after being tracked to his own estate while Evan was occupied elsewhere. Evan blames his brother for their Master’s death, since Elliot was on the premises when the death occurred. They parted ways at this point and have not spoken since.
Evan occupied himself with various trades as the years went on, and gradually amassed a small real estate empire on the east coast. Toward the end of his life he took under his wing a 20-something homeless, alcoholic college dropout by the name of Matthew, cleaning up his act and getting him off the streets. They became lovers after living together for several months, and had a few years as a happy couple before Evan was killed by a rival vampire who had been edging in on Evan’s territory and picking fights for years.
Evan would enter the game at this point, after his death.
The world he comes from is similar to ours, but with a few key differences. Deep into that Earth’s history, fantastic creatures and magic were a part of everyday life until a bloody war sprang up between the humans and the beings of power. A consensus was reached and the most powerful creatures banded together to create a parallel dimension free of humans, to which most beings with any sort of magic retreated. They came to call the world of the humans the First Realm, and their own newly created home the Second Realm. Humans slowly turned these stories into nothing but myths and legends, and forgot they had once shared the world with magic. Some creatures stayed behind, namely the ones that depended on humans for one thing or another and were able to pass unnoticed among them easily. One such species would be, of course, the vampires.
Because of this, Evan is no stranger to magic, parallel dimensions, or various kinds of strangeness, but it is still not entirely familiar to him. He has never personally been to the Second Realm, though he is aware of its existence and knows that there is a powerful society of vampires living on the other side of the veil. It’s one of the many stories his Master told him and Elliot before his death. But Evan has never felt the urge to leave the First Realm, and is not by nature an overwhelmingly curious person.

What are they bringing? (limit 3)
1) His wallet. This may seem pointless, but contained within are several personal photographs of his brother and of Matthew. I believe it will be integral to Evan’s psychological development within the game to have opportunities to consider his past. With the way Evan’s mind works, he will likely assume he is in hell upon waking within the game. This will make him wonder if his life decisions led him there.
2) A lighter. Though Evan doesn’t smoke, he often carries a lighter to make picking up potential prey in clubs and bars easier. Offering to light someone’s cigarette in a back alley offers a good pretext for coming up close without alarming the other person. Naturally, in-game this would give Evan some small fire-starting uses.
3) His earring. Evan wears a single earring on his right ear which he received from his Master upon being turned into a vampire. When he was alive, it was enchanted to keep him ‘connected’ with his twin brother by showing through the color of the inset gemstone whether Elliot was injured or otherwise incapacitated. Being dead, the enchantment should have dissipated and left the stone clear. Depending on the parameters of magic within the game, this earring would either possess a somehow-warped enchantment that has been altered by the game area, or could be drained of power and ready for re-enchantment by any sources of magic within the game itself.

Abilities/Powers: Here, a description of the type of vampire Evan is would be prudent. Evan is not dead in any respects, and is closer to a biological mutation that can alter the genetics of other humans under the correct circumstances. He is not affected adversely by sunlight or holy objects. He possesses super-strength, and incredible speed—to the point of being able to blur into invisibility when he really pushes himself. He can take more abuse than most humans (read: it’s harder to injure him). If injured, he can heal from almost any physical damage, though greater injuries (say, a broken bone) require the intake of blood. He doesn’t require any sustenance other than blood, and can only feed on humans as it keeps his genetic mutation in balance. If he goes for over two days without feeding, his inner predator begins to take over and he becomes increasingly aggressive and seductive, eventually reaching the point where he will do anything to secure prey. He considers this to be his darker side and rarely indulges in a true hunt, though it satisfies him on a visceral level when he is stalking a frightened human. If injured to the point of needing to feed, Evan may lose all conscious thought and begin operating purely on instinct, striking out and feeding on the nearest source of blood. Matthew almost died this way once, so sentiment does little to prevent an attack of this kind. When his vampire characteristics rise to the forefront, his eyes turn blue and his fangs elongate visibly.

Personality: Evan can be very stubborn, sometimes in ways that end up harming him, as evidenced by his refusal to forgive his brother for ‘letting’ their Master die. He is difficult to offend, but very slow to forgive if someone manages to push him past his tolerance levels.
Since becoming a vampire his personality has been altered further, to an extent, and he tries to incorporate his mutation’s instincts into his lifestyle rather than waste time fighting them off constantly. He has strong territorial imperatives, which is a part of the reason he ended up building himself a small real estate empire over the years. He feels good when he has a ‘pack’ to protect, though it is not simple for others to win his loyalty in this manner. In that same vein, loyalty and protectiveness factor greatly in his personality. He can be possessive at times if he considers someone or something to be ‘his’, though this only becomes dangerous or debilitating if a blood-bond of some sort is formed between him and the other person. This entails an exchange of blood on the part of both parties, whether with intent or not. The effects (possessiveness, protectiveness, and a slight one-sided empathic connection) wear off over a period of several days if not renewed, but can become permanent if renewed often enough.
Evan’s territorial imperatives can make it difficult for him to accept challenges to his authority, particularly when he feels he is in the right, but he will willingly if reluctantly cede authority to someone he respects or feels outclasses him in some way.
Deep down he’s a little bitter towards maternal figures; his mother abandoned him, though he never knew for certain why, and he was mostly raised by a strong male role model. May be why he tends to prefer male romantic partners, though he’s never been shy about seducing woman when necessary.
Evan died as an act of self sacrifice. Was afraid the vampire would take
And, perhaps one of the most key parts of Evan’s personality: he is deeply lonely, having lost his Master and left his brother fairly early on in his life. He can make conversation easily enough, but it’s rare for him to make real connections with anyone. Matthew helped to ease that loneliness for a time, but now that Evan’s alone in the game? It’s sure to be back full force.

Happiest Memory: When Matt found out he was a vampire (on account of almost dying) and didn’t reject him despite it.
Worst Memory: Coming home to find his Master dead. (Dead vampires do not turn into dust, they just revert to being human after a few hours. The genetic mutation dies along with the body.)

List of fears: Evan likes to imagine that he has his vampiric nature under control, but one of his deepest fears is that he’ll become injured and hurt someone he cares about. This has happened before, with Matthew, so it was driven even harder into his psyche.
He also has a slight irrational fear in regards to vampire hunters, given his experiences with them over the course of his life. Logically he knows that he can fight them off and/or kill them in combat if need be, and even evade them long enough to escape. But something in the back of his mind makes him feel like he won’t be able to escape, once he’s being hunted.
Those aside, he’s freaked out by creatures that he can’t sense or fight, even with his heightened abilities. Interpret that as you will.

Regrets: As mentioned earlier, Evan is not usually one to stress or angst over the fact that he’s a vampire. On the other hand, the fact that his urges and instincts almost killed Matthew several times (once as a result of lashing out while injured; another time when he had gone too long without feeding and scared the shit out of Matthew by hunting him down in the middle of the night somewhere in the city) is something that weighs heavily on his mind.

1st Person Sample Entry: Mod interview!!

3rd Person Sample Entry:
There was a musty scent in the air as he awoke; some strange damp mixture of dust and mold that made him wrinkle his nose in distaste even before he fully floated into consciousness. Eyes quickly adjusting to the dim lighting as they opened, Evan made an aborted attempt to jolt into a standing position that was halted by the deep ache that suddenly radiated through his entire body. Where was he? The last thing he remembered—the alley—fighting—dying—
Moving more warily as he took stock of his body’s aches and pains, he scanned his surroundings for some hint or clue that might hold an explanation. He appeared to be sprawled on the floor in a narrow hallway, lit intermittently by wall-set lamps. A gleam of light on glass caught his attention some distance down the hall, and he began to stand, encouraged by the thought of a window which might provide a better idea of his location.
A faint sound, almost like a whisper, came from behind. Evan flinched and spun around, gritting his teeth against the ache.
Nothing was there.
He stared intently into the distance, trusting his sense of hearing more than any impression of emptiness the hall might hold. A minute passed, and then another. He frowned and began to relax, but just as he began to turn back towards the window in the distance, there was a huff of displaced air from directly beside his ear.
Evan went rigid and swung around defensively, eyes shooting to blue and fangs extended, only to find again that he was staring at nothing but a wall.
“I’m not in the mood for games,” he hissed, gaze darting around wildly in rising paranoia. “Who’s there? Are you the one who brought me here?!”
For a moment, nothing but silence was his reply. Then his ears picked up a strange low hum in the distance, and he turned to watch in incredulous disbelief as what could only be described as a wall of darkness rushed toward him from the farthest end of the hall. Without a second thought, he began to run in the opposite direction only to see shadows approaching from there as well.
He gritted his teeth and sped up, quickly realizing he had only one other option and sincerely hoping the original owners of the house had not invested in high-quality glass. With a silent prayer to some unnamed deity, he dove at the window shoulder-first.

Character Name: Alex Mercer
Canon: [Protoype]
Canon Point: Just after the end of the first game
Age: 30
Why do you feel this character would be appropriate for this setting?: N/A
Background/History: http://prototype.wikia.com/wiki/Alex_Mercer
Previous Game History: (optional) N/A
What are they bringing? (limit 3) Nothing but the clothes on his back.

Abilities/Powers: - Shape-shifting (primarily to turn his body into a weapon, to make a natural shield or armour, or to take on the physical appearance of another person)
-Extreme physical strength (“cutting through tanks” strong)
-Infrared vision
-Instant healing (only if he’s well-fed; making new, healthy tissue costs energy and mass)
-Extreme durability (via instant healing)
-Enhanced speed and jumping; combines with his gliding, air dashing, and climbing abilities to allow him to travel over land very quickly despite any obstacles that might be in the way.
-The ability to consume living organisms in order to add to his mass and to absorb their memories (the latter only works if the brain is intact).
-Gliding over short distances (requires the ejection of a small amount of biomass in order to provide some propulsion, however)
-“Air dashes” that allow him to change direction in mid-air, add more horizontal distance to a jump, or to add more propulsion to allow him to glide longer.

Essentially, he’s about the greatest security threat ever; he can steal an employee’s identity and memories to slip right through even a heavily guarded entrance, or he could just tear his way through the door. There’s also the possibility that he’s fire-proof, although the lack of fire damage in-game could have simply been a pragmatic choice to prevent near-constant fire damage during fights and can thus be cut from role-playing. The nature of the Blacklight virus means that he has a natural aversion to water, as evidenced by his tendency to leap high into the air to try to escape it if he becomes submerged rather than simply swimming to dry land.

It is important to note that Alex is not immortal; he was infected with a parasite that undoubtedly would have eventually killed him, and Blackwatch did manage to create a gas that would have killed him as well with enough exposure. Conventional weapons do not seem to be able to kill him, but they can weaken him to the point of being completely unable to defend himself (he can survive a nuclear blast, but reconstructing himself from puddles of goo took some time and some additional biomass from at least one unlucky crow.)

Personality: Alex Mercer is, and always has been, somewhat cold. His initial instinct when meeting someone new is to be at least somewhat suspicious of their motives; a childhood spent in foster care, as well as several recent weeks of being hunted like a dangerous wild animal, almost losing his sister, discovering the unpleasant nature of his affliction, and betrayal have taught him that anyone, absolutely anyone, might turn around and stab you in the back for their own gain.

However, this isn’t to say that he shuns all human contact. There is no one he cares for more than his little sister (even going so far as to risk his life tracking the monster that kidnapped her). There were three others he trusted as well: his ex-girlfriend Karen Parker (who later betrayed him and nearly got him killed), a doctor by the name of Dr. Ragland who’d been given the blessing of his sister (who saved his and his sister’s lives) and a Blackwatch agent named Robert Cross who’d turned to him in an effort to both take down Blackwatch and to end the Blacklight plague (this, unfortunately, did not end well, but not through any fault of the agent). Thus, although Alex is typically at least somewhat paranoid, once someone has earned his trust he can be an invaluable ally.

A combination of Alex’s amnesia (and re-discovery of his identity/history), his epiphany of the true nature of his condition, the actions he’d been forced to take in order to survive and the get his revenge, and the memories of the hundreds of people and creatures he’d been forced to consume has given him something of an identity crisis. On the one hand, he does have a very strong moral compass as evidenced by his disgust with Blackwatch’s actions and his own actions from before he became infected with Blacklight, as well as some reluctance to reveal how he was getting top-secret information to his sister. On the other, he is a predator in a very literal sense, and is reminded of his actions by the final memories of his victims every time he closes his eyes. Compounding this is the fact that he isn’t exactly human, and has capabilities far beyond that of both humans and machines. This has left him with the dilemma of either trying to fit into society again despite knowing all too well just how flawed all human beings really are and having to constantly keep himself in check; or embracing his new, more violent nature to alter the world to better fit his own ideals, even though this would result in the extinction of the human species.

Finally, Alex is gifted in a number of fields thanks to the memories he’s acquired from his many victims. He is an expert in genetics, possessing the memories of many of the field’s best and brightest, and has extensive knowledge in US military doctrine, techniques, and equipment.

Happiest Memory: Well, relatively happy memory...probably when he found Dana in the nick of time when Blackwatch had invaded her apartment. She was still alive and unharmed, and that's all that matters.
Worst Memory: Dana getting kidnapped.
List of fears: Not being strong enough to protect the people he cares about.
Regrets: Not being able to save Dana when she was kidnapped. He'd just recovered his powers, and they didn't make even the slightest bit of difference when she was taken.

1st Person Sample Entry: Mod Interview!

3rd Person Sample Entry: Alex stumbles as his feet hit the roof of the apartment building, his body weakening as the parasite digs deeper into him. He can feel the ache throughout his body as it fights back; already the fight has cost him his weapons, his shield. Judging by how deep the pain is...a flash of panic, and he tries to push the thought out of his mind. He’ll find a cure, or fight it off before it gets him killed. That’s a certainty. Can’t let Dana down. Can’t let their crimes go unpunished.

He takes a breath, pushes open the door, heads for the apartment. Dragging himself inside, Dana notices him. Worry crosses her face for a moment.
“Man, you look like shit, but, this might help.”
There’s something on her laptop, more research conducted while he was out. He steps closer, sees something about a doctor; his mildly fevered mind jumps to a conclusion.
“McMullen?”

“No, but they’re watching someone for him, ‘kay. It’s this doctor named Bradley Ragland.”

A name. Someone with answers, someone he can hunt. Alex jumps at the opportunity.
“Where is he?”

Dana raises a hand to assuage his sudden flare-up.

“He’s a good guy. ‘Kay, you find him, he helps us get to McMullen. He’s uptown at St. Paul’s hospital, he runs the morgue there.”

He turns to head out. Right. This “Ragland” has information, but if Dana believes he’s more useful alive, then he’ll just have to try talking the man into co-operating.
“W-wait, hold up! There’s more.”

He turns to listen.

“Alright, so, I did some research on Hope, Idaho. It was an army town. On July 21st, 1969, it vanished...”

She goes on, explaining things he already knows, but that he shouldn’t know. Memories from dead soldiers, frightened scientists who’d been unfortunate to possess some of the knowledge he needed to piece together what the hell was going on. Fragments of their memories line up, creating a narrative that matches what she’s saying. He even contributes Elizabeth Greene’s name at the correct moment when Dana asks if he recognizes the girl in the photograph. So caught up is he in the spinning memories that he continues the narrative:

“Hope, Idaho was an experiment.”

Dana stands up, surprised.

“How could you possibly know that?”
Shit. Well...no sense hiding it from her. She’ll probe, and...someone else needs to know.
“The people I’ve killed...they’re in me.”

His heart sinks when he sees the fear in her face; it’s just like the night he woke up all over again. Too late to stop, though; it comes out seemingly on its own, taking some small fraction of the burden with it. He turns away from her; he doesn’t want to see her taking all these hideous things in. He feels her grab his arm anyway, demanding his attention.

“What the fuck are you talking about?!”

“I can understand it all. I’m supposed to do these things.” It spills out now; someone else needs to know, she needs to know the hell he’s been through, what he’s been forced to do. “But it’s right, I can feel it!”

Desperation kicks in; his heart starts pounding as the realization that she might very well reject him sinks in. No...no, she has to understand! He doesn’t even notice that he’s been forcing her back like some kind of predatory animal cornering its prey until she bumps into the computer desk. Guilty, he backs off to give her space to breathe. Hearing the undercurrent of fear in her voice when she speaks again is heartbreaking. She’s being brave...she shouldn’t need to be brave, not when they’re just talking. Not around him.

“Find Ragland...and ask him about McMullen...” Oh god...Oh god, no. He can hear revulsion in her voice; she must think he’s a monster, a murderer no better than Blackwatch. He reaches out, hoping to comfort and reassure her that he hasn’t changed; that hope is dashed when she turns away and blocks him with her own hand. Dejected, he slips out. Maybe...maybe she’ll forgive him if he leaves for a while. Maybe he’ll forgive himself. At least there’s still work to do; maybe when it’s done, he’ll have thought of how to apologize.

Purple or green, I guess.

Why do you feel this character would be appropriate for this setting?  Long story short, he's grounded enough to keep his cool around most things that would unsettle people, and isn't quick to panic. That not to say he doesn't get paranoid from time to time, but he's not going to freak out and start screaming over everything. He has the resolve to keep going. I wouldn't say he has the mental strength to deal with anything to come his way, but he's had his fair share of horrors. He ended up becoming a child detective that specialized in murder cases, so he's seen the ugly side of people and all sorts of dead bodies. He has the power to read the thoughts and emotions of corpses' dying moments, and has nightmares of those deaths every night without fail. Time and time again he has to deal with horrible experiences, and he's never going to be okay with them-- but he knows he has to keep going, no matter what.

What are they bringing? (limit 3)
  1. A spiral-bound notepad he uses for notes and a pen.
  2. An MP3 player/headphones. He doesn't have anything to charge it with, but it's something he seems to wear around often.
  3. His wallet, mostly for the fake ID card he has in it. It has random receipts and tickets in it, maybe a photo, and some money, not that it'll be of any use where he's going.
Abilities/Powers: As far as supernatural abilities go, he's only got one: his kansei. Kansei roughly translates to strong emotions, and kanseis are powers that relate to emotions. Kangai's allows him to relive the dying moments of any corpse he touches. That's right, relive. Any contact with the deceased causes him to feel the thoughts and emotions that were going through their head. However, there's a lot of factors that go into how bad the experience is for him and how accurate the reading is, including:
  • How he's in contact with the body: Touching their clothes is perfectly fine. Skin to skin contact will always trigger his kansei, and if he has to read their last moments, that's how he does it. However, indirect contact also triggers a reading, such as blood splatter. Basically, any part of their body directly touching his body will do it.
    • A note about blood contact: Blood contact is the purest form of contact for a kansei holder. That means that his powers will be at their strongest if he touches blood. In this case, he will automatically pass out, even if the blood is wiped away. When blood contact occurs, he will relive the corpse's death in vivid detail. Usually he just reads their thoughts and emotions, but with blood contact he will also see things from their perspective, as if he were possessing the body itself. Needless to say, this also means he feels their pain and horror, so it's a none too pleasant experience.
  • How long he's in contact with the body: Most people don't know about his kansei, so all he usually gets is a short touch. This gives him the strongest emotions that were going through the deceased's head when they were dying, and a general idea of their situation. However, if he is in prolonged contact with the deceased, he will be able to read their last moments in more detail.
  • How they felt when they were dying: The worse the death, the more regrets and feelings they have, the easier that information all relays to Kangai. Li Mei defines Kangai's kansei as "amplifying the emotions of the deceased". So the stronger the emotion, the more Kangai feels it. Also, Kangai has stated that he is only affected by strong negative feelings and not the "fuzzy feelings of grandmas dying in their sleep".
His kansei also has a related sub ability where he can sense when someone is recently dead/dying in the near vicinity. He becomes nauseous, and depending on how bad the death was, it can be anywhere from a headache to completely passing out.

Background/History:After his birth, this guy was abandoned on the doorsteps of a hospital complete with the cliched "Take care of him" note. His name then was Alexander, and he lived in foster care until he was adopted by a kind family in the city of Edgewater. While he accepted his new family, Alex didn't exactly get along with them. He was the anti-social kid that hated the world because he could. However, a sister of his refused to let things stay that way, and would always talk to him whenever possible. It took a while, but eventually the two became close, inseparable even.

Somewhere along the way, the siblings discovered strange powers: the sister had the ability to sense lies, and Alex could relive the dying moments of any corpse he touches. After meeting a policewoman named Schulz, they became child detectives and used those powers to solve case after case. This went well for a while, but an incident occurred where Alex's sister was shot in the chest and died before help came. Despite being the only witness, Alex ran from the scene of the crime and disappeared.

Three years later, Alex returns to Edgewater after hearing of his adoptive father's death. He stops by a coffee shop for a latte, and accidentally falls asleep. During that time, a woman was killed in the woman's bathroom. Alex discovers the body, and tries to read her dying moments, but is caught in the act and interrogated by a detective Mikolaj Gurski for his suspicious behavior. Gurski allows Alex to gather information to prove his innocence under one condition: that he report everything he learns back to him. Alex questions the other three people in the cafe: Chance, Kizaki, and Ms. Bergstrom and gets an idea of who they all are. Chance is a girl with anger issues and a few pages missing from her book but otherwise harmless, Kizaki is a member of a private investigation team tracking down the information that the victim, Sara, stole from Auten Engineering, and Ms. Bergstrom is a high-ranking employee at Auten Engineering's biggest rival company, Biodev Imaging. After gathering all the information, Alex pins the murder on Ms. Bergstrom. Sara was supposed to sell her information to Ms. Bergstrom, but raised the price when another party was interested. In an outrage, Ms. Bergstrom killed the woman and ended up trying to frame Alex when she realized that she left evidence at the scene.

Afterwards, Kizaki reintroduces himself as Naoki, and invites Alex to join the investigation team. They want to find out more about the third party, and his boss thinks Alex's ability will be useful. Alex tries to decline, but Aki, Naoki's twin sister and boss, arrives, assuring Alex that joining them is for his benefit, not theirs. Alex isn't sold on the idea, but Gurski says Alex must stay in Edgewater as a key witness. Aki offers to let Alex stay at their place, and Gurski gives the okay. With no other choice, Alex reluctantly tags along with the investigation team.

The next day, the investigation team goes on a trip to report back to their employer: William Auten, head of Auten Engineering. During the trip, Aki reveals to Alex that his power is called a “kansei”. She and Naoki, along with their third member, Li Mei, also have kanseis: Aki can project her thoughts into others, Naoki has a perfect memory, and Li Mei can sense emotions. This entire time, Alex has been secretive about his name, even when asked about it. With nothing to call him, Aki names him Kangai, based on the fact that he has a kansei. Once at Auten's estate, they meet Sohpia, Auten's assistant, and detective Gurski, who was also called by Auten to give a report. When they go to meet Auten outside his office, he surveys the group with a security camera first. Upon seeing Kangai, Auten yells at him to leave. Everyone is confused, but Sophia escorts Kangai back to the lobby, saying that once Auten calms down, he will want to speak.

With time to kill, Aki decides to chat up Liam Auten, Auten's nephew, for information, while the rest of the team follows suit by exploring the estate. Kangai runs into Kevin, the estate's IT guy, then meets reporter Marissa Klein in the living room, where with a little persuasion on Marissa's part, the two agree to work together to uncover Auten's secrets. She tells him a story of him administering drugs on women in order to genetically alter their children, and how it left most of them infertile, or cause complications during childbirth. After this conversation, Auten is discovered dead in his office, and Kangai manages to read his dying moments without anyone noticing. There's a lot of regrets and final thoughts, but one things stands out: a request to protect the vault, whatever that may be.

During his investigation, Gurski reveals that the investigation team is not what Kangai thought them to be: they're all kids owned by the government, on parole for crimes past. Li Mei reveals that Gurski is actually their parole officer, hence why he's always around. Kangai manages to find the vault, and its contents consist of a single SD card. Moments after Kangai pockets the card, Kevin bursts into the room and holds Li Mei hostage. Aki and Gurski warn Kangai that Kevin's the murderer, and Kangai manages to fend off Kevin before he can hurt anyone. Kevin is arrested, but Liam, who was under suspicion of other crimes, has gone missing.

A week later, Marissa calls Kangai to trade information. She advises Kangai to contact Dr. Johansen, Auten's university professor. Aki quickly arranges for the team to sign up under a host student program at the University of Edgewater, and they're on their way. Their student liaison, Shawn, gives them all ID cards, and Kangai's is curiously labeled as "Kangai Alexander", though no one should know his real name. The team gets traded off to another student tour guide, and Aki instructs Kangai to split off and search for Dr. Johansen. He gets caught by some grad students, Jupiter, David, and Nathan, who mistake him for a thief that broke into their lab last week. It wasn't Kangai, but he has no proof other than a bus ticket with a fake name on it.

The grad students call in the police, and lo and behold, Gurski appears to take the call. He starts to ask why he's not with the group when Chance bursts into the room uninvited, claiming that "poor Kangai" is being falsely accused-- he was with her in the coffee shop when the theft occured. Kangai isn't sure why Chance is helping him, or why she's here, but he goes along with her lie to establish an alibi for himself. Gurski is skeptical, and calls Aki over to explain why they're even on campus in the first place. She explains that Schulz is the one that ordered them, which surprises Kangai since he wasn't aware she was in charge of the investigation team as well.

When Naoki and Li Mei rejoin them, Naoki points out that something is wrong with the school bell. When they go to investigate the bell tower, Dr. Johansen's dead body is found at the top, crushed in half by the bell. Kangai tries to leave in order to avoid being overpowered by his kansei, but a drop of Johansen's blood gets on him. Blood is still contact with the deceased, and Kangai blacks out from the flood of Dr. Johansen's emotions.

It takes him a day to recover, but he gets right back to solving the case as usual. Chance tries to join in the investigation, and since he owes her for the alibi, Kangai reluctantly lets her tag along. This time, the suspects all are involved in typical college drama and they all have motives to kill each other, but not the professor. Jupiter is dating David who used to date Chance who told Nathan that Jupiter took the leadership position he deserved. It turns out Chance is a lot more devious and manipulative than she looks. When the clues are all gathered, Kangai deduces that it was Nathan. He was jealous that Johansen didn't choose him to take charge of the grad students, and felt that he deserved the position more than anyone else. He didn't even get to be second in command, as that was given to David. But most of all, he claimed that he was worthy of something called “Dragon's Blood”, and that Kangai, along with the rest of the team, was unworthy of it. Gurski cuffs him, but Nathan continues his crazed complaint, saying that “she” told him he could get everything he wanted once Johansen was out of the way.

Upon hearing that, Kangai realizes something: Chance is gone. Without explaining anything, he heads back into the science building after her. The others try to follow, but Chance tampered all their ID cards to prevent them from coming in. Her ditzy facade is gone, and Chance lets Kangai know right then and there that he's getting in her way, but she has orders to let him live. Kangai tries to grab Chance as she walks away, but Chance does something that causes him to collapse and become numb with pain. Chance makes her getaway, with Kangai helpless to stop her.

Ohey, an app.

Also, I wasn't entirely sure about this - with the three things your character can take with them, I'm not certain about the third thing. If it's an issue, please let me know, and I'll be more than happy to revise!
